Detecting Differential Item Functioning: Item Response Theory Methods Versus the Mantel-Haenszel Procedure

نویسندگان

چکیده

This Monte Carlo study assessed Type I error in differential item functioning analyses using Lord’s chi-square (LC), Likelihood Ratio Test (LRT), and Mantel-Haenszel (MH) procedure. Two research interests were investigated: response theory (IRT) model specification LC the LRT continuity correction MH enhances literature by investigating correct incorrect model-data fit comparing those results to There three fixed factors (number of test items, IRT parameter estimation method, equating) four varied (IRT used generate data data, sample size, impact). The findings suggested procedure without is best based on rate.

A new approach for differential item functioning detection using Mantel-Haenszel methods. The GMHDIF program.

To date, the statistical software designed for assessing differential item functioning (DIF) with Mantel-Haenszel procedures has employed the following statistics: the Mantel-Haenszel chi-square statistic, the generalized Mantel-Haenszel test and the Mantel test. These statistics permit detecting DIF in dichotomous and polytomous items, although they limit the analysis to two groups. On the con...

Formulating the Rasch Differential Item Functioning Model Under the Marginal Maximum Likelihood Estimation Context and Its Comparison With Mantel– Haenszel Procedure in Short Test and Small Sample Conditions

This study elaborates the Rasch differential item functioning (DIF) model formulation under the marginal maximum likelihood estimation context. Also, the Rasch DIF model performance was examined and compared with the Mantel–Haenszel (MH) procedure in small sample and short test length conditions through simulations. The theoretically known relationship of the DIF estimators between the Rasch DI...

Differential item functioning magnitude and impact measures from item response theory models.

Measures of magnitude and impact of differential item functioning (DIF) at the item and scale level, respectively are presented and reviewed in this paper. Most measures are based on item response theory models. Magnitude refers to item level effect sizes, whereas impact refers to differences between groups at the scale score level. Reviewed are magnitude measures based on group differences in ...

Evaluation of psychometric properties and differential item functioning of 8-item Child Perceptions Questionnaires using item response theory

BACKGROUND Four-factor structure of the two 8-item short forms of Child Perceptions Questionnaire CPQ11-14 (RSF:8 and ISF:8) has been confirmed. However, the sum scores are typically reported in practice as a proxy of Oral health-related Quality of Life (OHRQoL), which implied a unidimensional structure. This study first assessed the unidimensionality of 8-item short forms of CPQ11-14. Item res...

Detecting differential item functioning in behavioral indicators across parallel forms.

BACKGROUND Despite the crucial importance of the notion of parallel forms within Classical Test Theory, the degree of parallelism between two forms of a test cannot be directly verified due to the unobservable nature of true scores. We intend to overcome some of the limitations of traditional approaches to analyzing parallelism by using the Differential Item Functioning framework. METHOD We c...
